It can also have stairs that are getting harder to manage, a yard that demands more attention than you want to give it, or bills that no longer make sense.

The question isn’t simply whether you can stay. It’s whether your home is still working for the life you want to live. Before you decide to stay or move, start with these seven questions.

1. Do I feel comfortable and safe moving around my home?

Walk through your normal day, not just your front door. Think about the shower, stairs, entryway, lighting, and the route you take when you’re carrying laundry. Are there loose rugs, dark corners, or steps that make you hesitate? Some problems can be improved with lighting, repairs, grab bars, or professional home modifications. If you’ve had falls or feel unsteady, talk with a qualified health professional about what would help.

2. Are everyday tasks getting harder?

Consider cooking, cleaning, shopping, driving, yard work, and keeping up with repairs. What feels easy? What takes more effort than it used to? You don’t need to prove that you can do everything yourself. A little help may make a big difference.

3. What is staying here really costing me?

Look beyond the monthly mortgage or rent. Include property taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance, transportation, and upcoming repairs. Then compare those costs with realistic alternatives. Sometimes staying is the better financial choice; sometimes it isn’t. The numbers deserve a seat at the table.

4. What help would make staying easier?

Maybe it’s a reliable handyman, grocery delivery, a housekeeper, transportation, or a family member who can help coordinate appointments. Write down the tasks you would happily hand off. There’s no medal for personally wrestling the garbage cans down the driveway forever.

5. Does my home still support my social life?

Think about friends, neighbors, activities, transportation, and the people you enjoy seeing. A familiar house matters, but so does feeling connected. If getting out is becoming difficult, what could make visits and activities easier?

6. What happens if I have a difficult week?

Who would you call if the car broke down, you weren’t feeling well, or the air conditioner quit in August? Keep a short list of trusted contacts, important numbers, and backup plans. Knowing whom to call is a form of independence, too.

7. If I could change one thing, what would it be?

Sometimes the answer is a walk-in shower. Sometimes it’s less yard work, a smaller home, or more people nearby. Your answer can reveal whether the best next step is a home improvement, extra support, or a closer look at other living options.

You don’t need one forever decision. You need a starting plan.

Plan A: What works now, and what would help you stay comfortably? Plan B: What would you change first if your needs shifted? Plan C: What alternatives would you want to explore if staying stopped making sense?

You can love your home and still ask honest questions about it. That’s not giving up. That’s planning on your own terms.

Your next step

Pick the two questions that matter most to you today. Write down one thing to investigate and one person who could help. If you’d like a little more structure, start with my free guide, My Home, My Next Chapter.
